DESCRIPTION OF JOB:Ìý ÌýÌýÌý

The Lab ManagerÌýis responsible forÌýthe operation ofÌýtheÌýChemistryÌýlaboratories at Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ÌýUniversity, including managing the budget,Ìýpurchasing,Ìýmaintaining inventories,ÌýsupervisingÌýlab assistants,Ìýand overseeing laboratory safety.ÌýÌýThe Lab Manager reports to theÌýChairÌýof theÌýDepartmentÌýof Physical, Computational, and Mathematical Sciences (PCMS).ÌýÌýThis is aÌý10-month position.Ìý

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee laboratory equipment, preparation, and stockroom operations and personnelÌý
  • Manage department budget and purchasesÌý
  • Maintain laboratory safetyÌýand serve as Chemical Hygiene Officer for PCMS and other areas on campus as neededÌý
  • Oversee laboratory and classroom demonstration preparationsÌý
  • Hire, train, supervise, and mentor student lab assistantsÌý
  • Manage departmental budget,ÌýsubmitÌýinvoices, etc.Ìý
  • Maintain chemical and equipment inventoriesÌý
  • Collaborate with facilities and environmental health and safety for maintenance of fume hoods, air handling systems, de-ionizedÌýwaterÌýand other building operationsÌý
  • Serve as Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) for Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ÌýUniversityÌý
  • Serve as Chairperson of the Lab Safety CommitteeÌý
  • Coordinate sharing of laboratory resources between the University, High School, Campus School, and external institutions as necessaryÌý
  • Maintain safety data sheet database management and advise/consult with other departmentsÌýregardingÌýsafety data sheet managementÌý
  • Maintain equipment and instrumentation for use in laboratoriesÌý
  • FacilitateÌýpurchasingÌýnew equipment and all suppliesÌý
  • Ensure a safe laboratory setting for laboratory coursesÌý
  • Manage hazardous waste generated byÌýdepartmentalÌýlabsÌýand advise/consult with other departments as neededÌý
  • Review undergraduate research proposalsÌýÌý
  • Collaborate withÌýoutreach activitiesÌý
  • Participate in continuing education applicable to laboratory safety and other responsibilitiesÌý

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Necessary Education or Work Experience:

  • Bachelor’sÌýdegree in chemistry or a related field;ÌýMaster’sÌýdegree preferredÌý
  • Minimum of 5 years of Relevant laboratory experience
  • CHO (NRCC) certification or eligibilityÌýto take the examÌý

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Laboratory safety as required by the OSHA Laboratory StandardÌý
  • Ability to train and supervise student lab assistantsÌý
  • Proper handling and storage of hazardous chemicals and wasteÌý
  • Use and maintenance of laboratory equipment and instrumentationÌý
  • Ability to shift priorities and work with frequent interruptionsÌý
  • Effective communication skills

Specialized Technology Skills:Ìý

  • Overall proficient skill-level in Microsoft Office, whichÌýincludes:ÌýWord, Excel, Power Point, and OutlookÌý
  • Knowledge ofÌýMicrosoft TeamsÌýand Blackboard/CanvasÌýis a plusÌý
  • Willingness and ability to learn new softwareÌý
